5 Summerbars in Antwerp you can’t miss

5 Summerbars in Antwerp you can’t miss this yearAntwerp loves summerbars. Temporary ‘pop-up’ bars setting up camp on a special location during the summer months, offering a relaxed atmosphere, drinks, music, sometimes food and much more. Since the introduction in Antwerp of the first summerbars nearly a decade ago (including the ‘Strantwerpen’ beach bar on the border of the Schelde), the concept is booming, culminating this year in a flurry of different bars and concepts, scattered across the city. We’ve handpicked our 5 favorite summerbars you can’t miss this year. See you there!

1. SUMMER JOSEPHINE’S

Where? Boomgaardstraat 17, 2018 Antwerp (map)

When? Mon-Fri: 15:00-24:00 / Sat-Sun: 12:00-24:00

What?
For us, Summer Josephine’s takes the cake this year: a beautiful new summerbar by the owners of restaurant/cocktail bar Josephine’s (an Epic Guide favorite for cocktails on the South). Their restaurant lacks the space for an outdoor terrace, so summer months used to be a bit slow for the owner, restaurant entrepreneur Kasper Stuart. Looking for a space to pop-up this summer with a spacious summerbar, he found an awesome partner in beer brand De Koninck, who had some space behind one of their buildings in the Boomgaardstraat in Berchem. Architect Kurt Hereygers of studio ‘Not before Ten‘ designed an indoor restaurant and an outdoor cocktailbar using hundreds of wooden pallets, combining these ‘reclaimed’ materials with vintage sofa’s and lamp shades – a trademark of the Josephine’s restaurant. De Koninck bear kegs are used throughout the bar as design accents (doubling as strategic product placement). They just opened a few days ago, but when we visited the place was already packed – so go on time to secure a table indoor or outdoor, or claim a hammock in the park garden. Excellent!

Good to know? To brighten up the 50m long hallway underneath the De Koninck building to reach the bar, the owners invited internationally acclaimed graffitti artist Steve Locatelli and other local artists to adorn the walls.

2. CARGO

Where? Viaduct-Dam 64-80, 2060 Antwerpen (map)

When? Mon-Sun: 10:00-24:00

What?
One of our favorite spots in Antwerp, albeit a little bit out of the centre, this huge bar is based in an old barrack in the still relatively new ‘Park Spoor Noord‘ park. This beautifully landscaped park, designed by the world renowned Italian landscape designers Secchi & Vigano (who also designed the shelter on the Theaterplein) is a perfect escape during hot summer days. During the day, families with kids flock to the park (which also has sports facilities, a skate park, etc.), in the evening the Cargo summerbar is the center of the attention, often hosting concerts or screening movies.

Good to know? Soccer fans will be interested to hear that they will be showing all the World Cup matches on the big screen this summer!

3. BOCADERO

When? Mon-Sun: from 12:00 till …

What?
Bocadero is also one of the more established summerbars. They have a fixed location at the back of the enormous ‘Waagnatie’ building on the quays on the ‘Eilandje’ neighborhood in Antwerp. The owners wanted to bring a slice of ‘Saint-Tropez’ to Antwerp, and it shows in the decor: white wooden shelters, a little white sand beach, white chairs, cocktails and champagne. Due to the proximity of a massive parking space, this place is also a hit with people from all over Flanders, who come here for drinks or a party. A nice extra this year is the popup ice cream bar by Foubert on site, offering 24 flavours of home-made ice cream.

Good to know? Every Tuesday is Salsa night – start off with free Salsa initiation at 20:00 and show off your sweet moves at the party from 21:00 till 04:00 on the 400m² dancefloor.

4. LEFT

Where? Galgenweelpark, 2050 Linkeroever (map)

When? Thu: 17:00-23:00 / Fri: 17:00-24:00 / Sat-Sun: 12:00-23:00

What?
This place is a bit more ‘hidden’, a well-kept secret on Linkeroever (‘Left Bank’, hence the name), on a terrain generously offered by real estate developer Vooruitzicht who’s building a complete new neighborhood there (Regatta) and is going the extra mile to generate activity on the Galgenweel area and tease people to venture to Linkeroever. Given the slightly more ‘remote’ location and the bright blue staircase functioning both as a seating area as well as a bike stand (or should we say bike display?), this spot is especially popular with -fixie- bicycle enthousiasts. This place makes for a beautiful bike ride through the Voetgangerstunnel (an experience in itself) and an excellent spot for a chill afternoon with a panoramic view on the city.

Good to know? Last year they had yoga by the lake on Mondays, live Jazz on Thursdays and more; this year they haven’t yet announced their programme so stay tuned by following Bar LEFT on Facebook.

5. STRANTWERPEN

Where? Galgenweelpark, 2050 Linkeroever

When? Mon-fri: 11:00 – … / Sat-sun: 10:00 – …

What?
Strantwerpen is another summerbar that discovered Linkeroever (they moved there this year, after different locations on the South and North of Antwerp in the previous years). They partnered with Club Cabane to build a huge beach bar with lots of white sand and cozy daybeds, focussing on a ‘day-time beach concept’ with plenty of sunbathing, cocktails and a loungy soundtrack.  Ibiza vibe, but with a view on the city.

Good to know? The food in the Strantwerpen restaurant is brought to you by the chefs of the Asian restaurant ‘Umami‘ (on the South), helmed by the same owners.
